Turin, 25 March 2025 – The Salesians of Don Bosco have elected Fr. Fabio Attard as their 11th Rector Major, succeeding their founder, Don Bosco. This historic election took place during the 29th General Chapter of the Society of St. Francis de Sales.
Fr. Attard, a Maltese Salesian, brings a wealth of theological, pastoral, and academic experience to his new role. His deep commitment to Don Bosco’s charism and mission makes him well-equipped to lead the Congregation’s 13,750 consecrated Salesians in 92 provinces across 136 nations.

In his leadership, Fr. Attard will focus on youth ministry, lay collaboration, and missionary work, continuing the Salesian commitment to education and evangelization. His election marks a significant milestone in the Congregation’s journey, inspiring hope and renewal for the new generations.
Born in Gozo, Malta, Fr. Attard holds a degree in Theology and a Licentiate in Moral Theology. His extensive leadership experience includes serving two terms as General Councillor for Youth Ministry, during which he spearheaded global initiatives addressing marginalization, poverty, and migration. His outstanding contributions were recognized by Pope Francis, who appointed him as a Consultant to the Dicastery for Laity, Family, and Life.
Under his guidance, Salesian missionary volunteer programs have flourished, and technical and vocational education and training (TVET) has been strengthened through projects like Don Bosco Tech Africa and Don Bosco Tech ASEAN. He has also represented the Salesians at international forums in Brussels and New York, advocating for youth policy, migration, and employment opportunities for young people.
Between 2020 and 2023, Fr. Attard played a crucial role in coordinating Salesian and Lay Formation in Europe. His efforts led to the development of a master’s program for the formation of Salesians and lay collaborators, now managed by the Pontifical Salesian University in collaboration with the Youth Ministry Sector.

The global Salesian Family, comprising 32 member groups, warmly welcomes Fr. Fabio Attard as their new leader. His vision and leadership will guide the Congregation in its mission to serve young people and spread Don Bosco’s legacy in the 21st century.
He has visited Dimapur Province. He takes the place of Don Bosco in the congregation. We extend a hearty congratulations from St Xavier’s School, Harmutty.
