Green Energy Movement Takes Root at St Xavier’s School

Harmutty, Assam – 1 June 2025: In a significant move towards sustainability and energy efficiency, St Xavier’s School, Harmutty has initiated the installation of solar power systems on its campus. The first phase of the project is now underway, aiming to power half of the school with solar energy. If proven successful, the school plans to extend solar coverage to the entire campus in the near future.

This initiative aligns with the broader vision outlined by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to promote renewable energy in educational institutions (CBSE Circular on Solar Power). In regions like Assam—where only 3.1% of schools have adopted solar panels and many rural areas face unreliable electricity—such efforts are both timely and impactful.

Despite facing challenges including outdated wiring systems and unprofessional setups, the school remains committed to the transition. A dedicated technical team has been formed to address these issues and ensure uninterrupted power supply. A specialized installation team from Guwahati is currently overseeing the implementation process.

“Our goal is not only to ensure consistent power for teaching, learning, and administration,” said Fr Benny James SDB, Principal of St Xavier’s School, “but also to contribute meaningfully to a greener planet. Solar power enables us to provide a more sustainable and resilient environment for our students.”

The benefits of solar energy in educational settings are far-reaching. Solar-powered schools can function without disruption, even during power outages, ensuring smooth academic delivery. Moreover, they can serve as community hubs during emergencies or natural disasters.

As the school progresses with this green initiative, it sets an inspiring example for other institutions in the region. With perseverance and vision, St Xavier’s School, Harmutty is lighting the way—literally and metaphorically—toward a sustainable future.
